Objective To observe the efficacy of different dose penehyclidine hydrochloride on awakening time and quality of recovery from general anesthesia, for elderly patients, and investigate suitable dose of penehyclidine hydrochloride used in elderly patients as premedication. Methods Sixty ASA I or II elderly patients who were undergoing operation were randomly allocated into 3 groups. The patients were premedicated with atropine 0.5mg (group A) or penehyclidine hydrochloride 0.01 mg·kg-1 (group B),0.015 mg·kg-1 (group C) 30 minutes before induction, and were given general anesthesia. After operation, the patients must not be given any analeptic drug. Time to eye opening, time to endotracheal extubation and time to recovery were recorded after operation. Observe whether restlessness happened or not during recovery and whether delirium happened or not within 72 hour after operation.Results1. General state:there were no significant difference of BMI, operation time, drug dose and the total liquid intake in the three groups(P>0.05).2. Time to eye opening, time to endotracheal extubation and time to recovery:compared with group A, in group B, time to eye opening, time to endotracheal extubation and time to recovery were longer (P>0.05). That of group C lasted longer than group A or group B(P<0.05).3. Incidence of delirium and restlessness:postoperatively, group C had a highest incidence of delirium and restlessness among the 3 groups (P<0.05). Compared with group A, that of group B were higher (P>0.05).Conclusions Penehyclidine hydrochloride 0.015mg·kg-1 that was used in elderly patients as premedication delayed awakening time, and postoperatively, increased incidence rate of restlessness and delirium, but penehyclidine hydrochloride 0.01mg·kg-1 didn't.
