Objective To evaluate the effects of glutamine-enriched enteral nutrition on nutritional status, immunity and prognosis in patients with gastric cancer. Methods Sixty patients with gastric cancer were randomized to receive either an immune enhancing enteral diets or an isocaloric, ison itrogenous control diets for seven days.Enteral feeding was initiated 24 hours after surgery.Total protein albumin,prealbumin,IgG,IgA,IgM,CD4+,CD8+,CD4+/CD8+,hepatic and renal function, blood glucose, electrolyte were tested at the one day before operation, the first day after operation and the ninth day after operation.Hospital days and infectious complications were also observed. Results All the nutritional indicators and immunity indicators of the two groups on the first day after operation were lower than that on the one day before operation, and these indicators on the nine day after operation were higher in the EIN group than in the EN group. The level of PA,IgG,CD4+,CD4+/CD8+ were ascended on the ninth day after operation compared with that on the first day after operation, and there were significant difference between EIN group and EN group(p<0.05). Both of the different nutrition ways and the measure time played a significant part in these changes(P<0.05).No statistical difference was found in hospital days and infectious complications. Conclusion Compared with the normal enteral nutrition, glutamine enrichment nutrition can improve the nutrition status of gastric patients and reinforce the immunity function in patients undering surgery for stomatch cancer.
