Objective:1.To explore the difference of serum adipocyte fatty acid binding protein (A-FABP) serum levels between carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) patients with and without non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the effect of atorvastatin intervention. Methods: Forty patients with NAFLD and CAS were enrolled, while 30 patients with CAS only were selected as control group. Body mass index (BMI), Waist circumference (WC), Homostasis model assessment-IR (HOMA-IR), Cholesterol(CHOL), Triglyceride(TG) , Low density lipoprotein-chollesterol (LDL-C), High sensitivity c-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and Adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP) levels were detected and the Homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were calculated. Patients in two groups were treated with Atorvastatin 20mg/day for 8 weeks. CHOL, TG, LDL-C, hs-CRP, and A-FABP levels were detected after treatment. Results: 1.The levels of BMI, WC, HOMA-IR, CHOL, hs-CRP, TG, LDL-C and A-FABP in patients with NAFLD combined with CAS complicated were significantly different from those in control group (P<0.05).2. The values between BMI and HOMA-IR, WC and HOMA-IR, TG and hs-CRP in patients with NAFLD combined with CAS accompanied respectively were in significant positive linear correlation.3. Spearman analyses that in patients group NAFLD combined CAS, ,A-FABP positively associated with BMI, WC, HOMA-IR, CHOL, hs-CRP, TG , LDL-C(γ=0.98,0. 975,0.804,0.891,0.959,0.964,0.831,P<0.01),Multiple linear regression analysis showed that BMI, ,CHOL, hs-CRP, IR entered regression equation A-FABP = - 165.4204+57.9254×BMW - 4.3934×CHOL + 1.4423×CRP + 1.9688×IR.4. After Atorvastatin treatment for 8 weeks, the serum CHOL, hs-CRP, A-FABP, TG,LDL-C levels of two groups, were significantly decreased (all P < 0.05 compared with the one before treatment).5 After atorvastatin treatment ,the Decreased level of A-FABP has no associated with CHOL,TG,LDL - C,CRP(γ=0.-0.442,-0.18,0.74,-0.16,all P >0.05)Conclusion: 1. In patients with NAFLD combined CAS,the serum A-FABP levels were related to CAS, which suggested that A-FABP was a possible risk factor of NAFLD and atherosclerosis.2. Atorvastatin can decrease A-FABP serum levels, which might relate to the regulation of lipids. However, the exact mechanism needs further research.
