Application Of Somatostatin On Advanced Pelvic And Abdominal Carcinoma Patients Complicated With Malignant Bowel Obstruction

Objective:To investigate the effectiveness of somatostatin in malignant bowel obstruction due to inoperable pelvic and abdominal carcinoma patients.Methods:From May 2005 to December 2010,60 patients with malignant bowel obstruction due to pelvic and abdominal carcinoma were divided into groups:routine therapy group (control group,15 patients) and somatostatin group (15 patients).Besides the routine therapy,the somatostatin group received somatostatin (Somatostatin for Injection, Laboratoires Serono S.A.,6mg per day) by 24 hours continuous infusion for seven to fourteen days.The effectiveness was observed and compared between the two groups before and after therapy.Results: The clinical symptoms of abdominal distention and pain were relieved significantly in somatostatin grorp compared with the control group (76.7% and 46.7%)(P<0.05).The exhaust of anus was much earlier (93.3% and 70.0%)(p<0.05).The average volume of gastroenteral decompression reduced more rapidly [(230±110)ml/d and (504±111)ml/d]( p<0.001).Quality of life, evaluated with Karnofsky score (55±7 and 49±8)(p<0.01),was improved significantly;smaller and less fluid and air in the intestinal and colon at the 86.7% of patients plain abdominal radiography were observed in the somatostatin group.Conclusion:The admistration of somatostatin in combined with routine treatment is effective in the management of malignant bowel obstruction. It can effectively relieve the unressectable symptoms of malignant bowel obstruction and improve the quality of life in patients.There may be a good clinic prospect in advanced malignant intestinal obstruction patients applicated with somatostatin.
