Objective To study the impact of obesity on feasibility and short-term efficacy of laparoscopy-assisted radical gastrectomy. Methods Analysis on the basis of the clinical data of 531 gastric cancer patients who underwent laparoscopy-assisted radical gastrectomy in the Department of Gastric Surgery, Fujian Medical University Union Hospital between May 2007 to June 2010. They were divided into two groups, one group was named obese group(BIM≥25kg/m~2) included 83 patients and the another one was named non-obese group(BIM <25kg/m~2) included 448 patients. The patients'intraoperative and postoperative situation, conversion rate, postoperative complications, and short-term survival rates between the two groups were compared. Results The operative time in obese group was (224.7±57.3) min, and was significantly longer than that in non-obese group [(210.0±57.9) min, P<0.05]. And there were no statistically significant differences between obese group and non-obese group in the aspects of blood loss, the rate of blood transfusion ,increased number of leukocyte and granulocyte count on the first postoperative day, time of temperature recovery, first flatus and postoperative hospital stays(P>0.05). The mean number of retrieved lymph nodes of obese group was (24.8±8.4), and was significantly fewer than that of non-obese group[(29.9±10.2),P<0.05]. There were no significant difference between obese and non-obese patients in terms of conversion rate (2.4% versus 1.8%, P>0.05).And the postoperative complications rate was not significantly different between the obese group and non-obese group (16.8% versus 10.2%, P>0.05). 502 patients(94.5%) were followed up for 2-42 months, As for the survival curves, the survey showed there was no obvious difference between the two groups (P>0.05).Conclusions Obesity prolong the time of laparoscopic radical gastrectomy, but it did not influence the feasibility, security and short-term efficacy of the laparoscopic radical gastrectomy.
