Objective To study activated level and characteristic of IL-18 and IFN-y in the nasal polyps.By this research, possible helps for searching the pathogenesis and clinical treats the nasal polyp the new ways were hoped to be offered. Methods Levels of IL-18 and IFN-y secreted by peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMC)were detected using double sandwich ELISA method in 45 patients with the nasal polyps (trial group)and 31 healthy volunteers(control group).Levels of IFN-y were detected by the recombinant IL-18(rhIL-18) stimulating PBMCResult IL-18 levels in the serum and PBMC in the patients with the nasal polyps were 465.32±50.39 ng/L and 428.59±46.36ng/L, respectively, and were significantly higher than those in the control group(P<0.01).IFN-y levels in the serum and PBMC in the nasal polyps were 383.68±73.51ng/L and 379.92±71.47ng/L, respectively, and significantly higher than those in the control group(P<0.01).A positive correlation between IL-18 and IFN-rlevels was found in the patients(r=0.509, P<0.05).IFN-y could be induced by rhIL-18.Nasal polyps PBMC IL-18 levels and IFN-y levels were 202.46±38.52 ng/L and 361.58±49.23ng/L, compared with the control group 196.78±26.72 ng/L and 160.56±22.74ng/L, IL-18 no significant difference (P> 0.05), IFN-y significantly(P<0.05), serum levels of IFN-r in nasal polyps were positively correlated (r= 0.486, P<0.05).Conclusion An increased level of IL-18 is found in the patients with the nasal polyps and also correlated with increased level of IFN-y The rhlL-18 can stimulate PBMC in the nasal polyps to produce IFN-y, and IL-18 has a significant role promote the nasal polyps, infection may play a more important role in the development of nasal polyps, IFN-y levels may be associated with disease severity.
