ObjectiveFever of unknown origin (FUO) of which the reason is multiple and the clinical manifestation is various is a common complicated problem in clinic. The related factors of FUO, such as etiology, symptoms and signs, laboratory findings, diagnosis methods and the use of antibiotics and the spectrum of the origin, are analyzed in Beijing university Shenzhen hospital in recent ten years, and which provide the resources for larger epidemiological investigation and the processes for clinical diagnose and cure of FUO.Methods1 Making a specific table for every patient, and collecting up the specific information of all 1825 patients of the past decade in medical record library.2 Inscribing all patient resources.3 Analyzing the related factors of 429 patients who are consistent with standard of FUO in Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital and comparing to the domestic assemble resources.Results1 There were approximately 10% inpatients because of fever in Beijing university Shenzhen hospital in the past 10 years (2000—2009). 429 cases met for the criterion of FUO, accounting for 23.51% of all fever patients. The mean age of the FUO patients was 32.73±15.57 years; only 360 cases of 429 patients were diagnosed, accounting for 83.92%. Of all FUO patients, 270 cases (62.94%) had infectious diseases (ID), 50 cases (11.66%) had non-infectious inflammatory diseases (NID), 22(5.13%) had malignant diseases (MD), 18(4.20%) had miscellaneous diseases (Mi), and 69 (16.08%) were not determined. The most common ID origin was Bacillus typhosus.2 The diagnosis was confirmed by serology 22 patients (5.13%), bacteriological 90 cases (20.98%), body fluids or bone marrow 50 patients (11.66%). 50 patients (11.66%) were treated with hormones.3 The cephalosporin is much higher used in clinic comparing with other antibiotics. (P<0.001).Conclusion1 Infection is the main reason of FUO, followed by the order of unknown diseases, malignant diseases, and non-infectious inflammatory diseases,miscellaneous.2 The typhoid fever is much higher infected which seems to have increased, comparing with previous studies.
