The aim of this study is to explore the alteration of the expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and the remodeling of sympathetic nerve after acute myocardial infarction in typeâ…¡diabetic rats. Methods Samples were taken from the peri-infarcted area, ventricular septum and right ventricle (RV) in infarcted diabetic rats. By immunohistochemistric methods and computer Image analysis, the expressions of NGF and sympathetic innervation were examined in different groups (blank, diabetic, infarcted, respectively). Results In infarcted group, the expressions of NGF protein and the density of sympathetic and infarcted diabetic, nerve were both higher than those in blank group (P<0.05,P<0.01) and those in infarcted diabetic group (P<0.05,P<0.01). In diabetic group, the expressions of NGF were lower than those in blank group (P<0.05) and those in infarcted diabetic group (P<0.01),the density of sympathetic nerve were also lower than those in infarcted diabetic group (P<0.01).The sympathetic innervation was correlated with the NGF expression in the peri-infarcted area, RV and septum in infarcted group (P<0.05). Conclusion Diabetes mellitus(DM) decreases the expression of NGF protein in cardiomyocytes, but increases the sympathetic reinnervation and hyperinnervation, indicating that it may not be NGF but something else that plays a crucial role in the post-infarcted neural remodeling.
