Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of consultation-strengthened methadone maintenance treatment among heroin addicts. To study the influencing factors of consultation-strengthened MMT.To summarize a set of socially and psychologically feasible treatment measures. Methods: An intervention group (101 new heroin addicts) and a control group (96 new heroin addicts) were asked to do a questionnaire survey. After that the intervention group received methadone maintenance treatment combined with strengthened consultation treatment, and the control group received methadone maintenance treatment only. After one year, both groups were interviewed, with the aim to compare the methadone maintains treatment compliance rate, the improvement of mental health between the two groups and the influencing correlative factors of efficacy of consultation -strengthened MMT. Results:After one year's treatment, the methadone maintains treatment compliance rate of intervention group (97.3%) is higher than the control group (78%) and the difference has statistical significance (P<0.01). The positive rate of morphine in uronoscopy of intervention group is lower than control group and the difference has statistical significance (P<0.01).Acccording to the results of SCL-90: there are greater improvement in the intervention group than in the control group at mental health (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The influencing factors of consultation -strengthened methadone maintenance treatment are: age, education, health condition, household income,etc. Conclusion:The consultation -strengthened methadone maintenance treatment can not only increase the retention rate of accepted maintenance treatment and decrease the crime rate among drug users, but also improve the social and family relationship as well as the energy among drug users, meanwhile reducing the highly risky behaviors .
