Amy Tan is good at describing the relationships of the Chinese American society, including familial bonds, male-female relationships, male-male relationships, especially mother-daughter relationships. Through the probe of these relationships, Tan represents the existent situation of the female Chinese Americans and their offsprings. The two generations of the female Chinese Americans in Tan's novels live in the conflict of eastern belief and western value standards, traditional culture and modern culture. They try to seek for their identities, and continue their cultural traditions continually. In The Kitchen God's Wife, based on her mother Daisy Tan's life experience, Tan creates a female character Winnie. This thesis aims at analyzing the character Winnie. And through the analysis of the character Winnie, on one hand, this thesis analyses the role of the character Winnie. In the United States which is far away from homeland, Winnie is the carrier of the Chinese tradition and culture, and the bridge connecting past and present; on the other hand, this thesis probes the deep meaning of the change of the character Winnie. The change of Winnie reveals her awakening of feminism consciousness.
