The Later Chronicles of the Han Dynasty annotated by Li Xian is the most ancient annotation of Fan Ye's The Later Chronicles of the Han Dynasty, and also one of the famous Chinese ancient history annotations. This work has important historical material with rich exegetical materials which deserve deep research and investigation.Upon the research of ancient scholar, this thesis takes The Later Chronicles of the Han Dynasty annotated by Li Xian as research object, analyzing the gloss annotated by Li Xian and discussing the gloss terms, contents, and methods annotated by Li Xian and existed deficiencies. It also generalizes the characteristics of gloss annotated by Li Xian, and illustrates the important role of Li Xian's annotation in the research of history of Chinese lexicon and Chinese grammar. By comparing Li Xian's annotation with The Chinese Dictionary, this thesis makes complements to the existed deficiencies; it also has a restricted view to Shuo Wen in Tang dynasty and makes related implements to its current version by comparing Shuo Wen cited by Li Xian's annotation with current Shuo Wen. By discussing deficiencies existed in Li Xian's annotation, we can take advantage of it to enrich the research contents of gloss and gloss history.This thesis is divided into six chapters:The introduction part mainly introduces The Later Chronicles of the Han Dynasty and Li Xian's annotation, and comments the current situation of The Later Chronicles of the Han Dynasty annotated by Li Xian to know the overall research of Li Xian's annotation.The first chapter makes detailed discussion towards the gloss contents in Li Xian's annotation by divide these into phonetic notation, distinguishing character, denoting word, explaining sentence, syntactic analysis, illustrating rhetoric, etc with detailed analysis and examples.The second chapter makes category demonstration towards the gloss terms used in Li Xian's annotation, and divides the related gloss terms into phonetic notation, explanation of words and sentences, collation and breaking interchangeability of Chinese characters, it also illustrates this division by examples and summarizes characteristics of gloss terms.The third chapter discusses five gloss methods included using similar sound word to explain the meaning of a new word, reasoning sense from sense, using lexicographical book, articulation of old notes and confirmation of dialect with examples and analysis. The fourth chapter discusses problems like sense deficiency and citing cases slowly, etc existed in The Chinese Dictionary by comparing it with Li Xian's annotation, and supplement The Chinese Dictionary according to Li Xian's annotation.The fifth chapter makes contrast between Shuo Wen cited by Li Xian's annotation and current Shuo Wen to have a restricted view of Shuo Wen's version in Tang dynasty and to male related supplement of current Shuo Wen.The sixth chapter differentiates and analyzes gloss mistakes existed in Li Xian's annotation for a better understanding and usage of Li Xian's annotation. Moreover, it has positive meaning to enriching the research contents of gloss and the research of history gloss.
