The thesis conducts an analysis of Elizabethâ…¡'s discourse in the framework of Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar, which aims at exploring functional features of her public speeches during ten years. Since the mid 70s of last century, discourse analysis gradually developed into a specialized research of language use in communication. Discourse analysis turned out to be focuses in the academe of foreign countries, but studies of this kind are still far from enough in our country. The thesis intends to analyze the ten speech discourses selected from the Queen's Christmas Broadcast approximately every five years from the perspective of Halliday's three Meta-functions, in order to reveal their functional characteristics, and to find out the possible linguistic changes used to perform functions. The methodology of the paper combines both quantitative and qualitative research. By using retrieval tools, quantitative analysis is carried out to present the functional features of the Queen's speech discourse. And then qualitative analysis is also conducted to testify and explain the result of the quantitative research. By analyzing functional features of the Queen's discourses, we could find out the relationship between the choices of language modes and the meaning intended to express.
