Relation Between Configrual And Feature Face Information Under The Condition Of Holistic Process

Human face is a special visual stimulus, and human face cognition is also special. In the researching of human face cognition, there exists two incompatible ideas about weather face is holistically processed or locally. The holistic theory argues that face is a Gestalt, it's processing is holistic. The locale theory argues that local face information is enough, no need of representation of the whole face. Nowadays, researchers are apt to receipt the holistic theory, and agree that face is holistically processed. But the idea of holistic is not so perfect yet. Holistic, we mean Gestalt, this concept is not a operable one, we can't further incept the mechanism of it. In this paper, we argues that the holistic can explained by interaction between local information, such as features information of local configural information. To explore the attributes of the holistic process we can investigate the attributes of interaction between local information. In this research we want to know the relation between configural information and feature information, so we should control the variation of the two information in some way. In order to control the two information increased in different steps, we used the focus windows technique, which show the local feature clearly but control the two information outside. If the variation influenced the perception of the clearly showed local feature, then we can say that there are an interaction between local feature and the information outside the local feature. And more, we can get the relation model between configural and feature information through the variation of the two kinds of information, this is another purpose of this paper. We all know that there two kinds of information in the human face, and there two independent subsystems to deal with it. It is sure that the two subsystem in our visual process system, but how did the two work together? That is what is the relation. In spatial frequency research, it has been demonstrated that the low frequency information represent the configural information but the high frequency information represent the feature information. In the focus windows technique, the changing filtering of the information outside the local feature make the two kinds of information increased with different steps, so we can investigate how the two information works each. Finally, we found that the two kinds of information play different roles in the holistic face process, and they are competitors. Which kind of information will be processed depends on the difficulty of extracting.The conclusions of this research:Face is holistically processed.Configrual and feature face information plays different roles in the face holistic process.
