A Study Of Zhu Shenghao's Translation Style

Zhu Shenghao rendered Shakespeare's plays in the form of prose in vernacular Chinese. So far there have been a lot of researches on his translations. And most of them tried to compare the style of his and Liang Shiqiu's, aiming at evaluating whose is better and which translation strategy should be adopted to keep the original style. The author of this thesis intends to take a descriptive view and find the overall style he shows in his translations which should not only be shown in one work.This thesis chooses two of his works Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet and adopted the microscopic and macroscopic perspectives. The theory of Translation Stylistics and the method of quantitative and qualitative analysis are utilized.After comparison and analysis, the author has located several features of his translation style: elegant, smooth and performable. And this style is achieved from several aspects: care about the stage effect, audience's response, prose style and sometimes rhyming prose, domestication, keeping the surface meaning of puns translation and cultural images with the purpose of making the language smooth and acceptable to the Chinese audience, and lastly little footnotes. And last the thesis has combined Zhu's education background, social background, and personal likeness and so on to give an explanation for his style.
