The Cognitive Study Of CFW In Dream Of Red Chamber Under The Guidance Of Conceptual Integration

Chinese Folk Wise crack (CFW) is a kind of unique art language of Chinese folks. Because CFW offers a great degree of flexibility and strong expression, it is widely disseminated and beloved by people. Created in the practice, CFW, as a special language form blends philosophy with fun, wisdom with popularity, a wide range of content and a special structure together. With distinctive ethnic characteristics and rich flavor of life, CFW is often applied in spoken language by Chinese people. As the important part of idioms, CFW has been paid attention to by linguists who have achieved successful theories in the origin, development, change, definition, classification, formation and so on.The study of CFW in traditional theory generally is presented in the following areas : (1) Structure theory divides CFW into two parts——the surface structure and the deep structure and deeply studies the relationships between them .There is"Coincide"and"distinction"between the surface structure and the deep structure which form the paradox of CFW .(2) The theory of semantics thinks that CFW is composed of the descriptive part and the explanatory part which are the prerequisite and the basis for the emergence and existence of CFW .If there is only the explanatory part, there will not be ridiculous additional significance. If there is only the descriptive part , the real meaning will not be revealed .It is because of the relationships between them that CFW can present its complete meaning (3) The theory of reality and non-reality points out that many images are fictitious , that is to say , the figures , objects and phenomena in the CFW do not exist in objective world or they exist in the history or the reality but they have collocation with other figures , objects and phenomena beyond the convention only to express the strong functionality.(4) Contrast theory compares CFW and other language forms and reveals the differences and similarities from the organization, grammar and meaning formation in order to discriminate different language forms . (5) Semiotic theory sorts out CFW and analyzes CFW from the perspective of the signifier and the signified.(6) Cross-cultural communication theory thinks the cultural features of CFW and cultural differences between Chinese and English and then further researches translation strategy.But all the research is limited to the surface structure, the deep structure, grammar structure, the comparison with other language forms, the history of CFW and so on. Little research is done in cognitive mechanism of CFW to interpret the cognitive process of the formation. It is not good to deeply understand this kind of traditional language forms.The innovation of the thesis is to apply conceptual integration theory of Fauconnier, Turner and so on to investigate the cognitive process of meaning formation in this Chinese traditional form——CFW. Conceptual integration theory expounds the operating mechanism and processes of meaning formation of CFW from the perspective of mental spaces , conceptual integration networks, generic spaces , input spaces , the relationship of mapping ,compressing and emergent spaces . Based on the dynamic concept , time and space , conceptual integration theory produces new concepts of CFW after time and space dimensions are processed by mental spaces . The division , integration ,change and transmission of concept is a cognitive route .During analyzing the process of meaning formation based on the theory of conceptual integration, we find that the theory of conceptual integration, which plays an important role in the meaning formation of CFW , visualizes and clarities the comprehension of meaning of CFW . Spaces of conceptual integration are multidimensional and the process of conceptual integration is ordered , which guides the comprehension and formation of meaning in CFW .Theory of conceptual integration reflects the nature of capacity and science ways of comprehending the objective things .This paper applies conceptual integration in cognitive language as a special theory view to do research in the traditional language form——CFW . On the one hand we plan to prove the theory of conceptual integration is a general cognitive model. On the other hand we try to reveal the deep cognitive process of meaning formation in CFW in order to supply a new method.The thesis consists of five chapters in addition to an introduction and a conclusion. In the introduction we simply introduce the previous research in CFW. In Chapter one we give a brief introduction of the concept of CFW and its organization and the relationship between the former and the latter part. Then we sort out CFW into three basic categories and thirteen specific categories based on the former part and classify it into two basic categories and thirteen specific categories according to the latter part. In Chapter two we introduce the theory basis of the thesis——conceptual integration ,the basic unit of conceptual integration——mental space , the bridge and link of conceptual integration——mapping ,main elements of conceptual integration——analogy and similarity ,important way of conceptual integration——compress and the application of all mediums during meaning formation . Chapter four applies the classic CFW in Dream Of the Red Chamber to analyze the cognitive mechanism of meaning formation in CFW under the guidance of conceptual integration by examples and diagrams. At last in the conclusion we summarize the aim, achievements and weakness of the thesis...
