As a sort of quite independent design, layout design combines many kinds of graphic design elements together, including illustration, typeface, photo and color etc. Layout design had different styles during different period of time in past. While among all of these styles, the one comes from the Modernism movement which happened during the early 30 years of 20th Century was the most significant. Modernism offered a whole visual expression for layout design.Modern Art changed style from representation to abstraction while Modernism Design changed its customer from nobility to ordinary people. Both of them interacted and influenced from each other. Some elements in Modernism layout come from Modernism Art. During Modernism, designers widely used legible san-serif typeface, which matched the concise style very much. As for color, it was pretty simple. Color for Constructivism and De Stijl was really influenced by their art masterpieces. During that time, graphics changed from representation to abstraction just like what art industry had done. Layout design had many kinds of styles, but most of them were abstract. Collage came from Cubism and caused photomontage.The reasons caused their interaction were quite diverse. There were inter discipline, new idea and communication as well.Modernism relocated in America due to the World Warâ…¡and gradually changed to the International typographic style. Internationalism created many new styles but basically remained Modernism. Modernism was a milestone for design history, not only for its useful layout, but also for the new idea.
