There has been a prominent shift within the field of English learning and teaching over the last few decades with greater emphasis being put on from teachers and teaching to learners and learning. According to this new shift, more and more attention has been given to strategy training, and a large number of learners explore how, when and why to use language learning strategies to evaluate and monitor their own learning, so that they can take a more active role in language learning process. It is further assumed that teachers can assist the language learning process by promoting awareness of strategies, and encouraging their use.The thesis focuses on the background of strategy training as well as the practice of strategies-based instruction in language learning process; it also proves the teachability of learning strategies. The thesis begins with the theoretic background of the application of strategy training to English teaching, and presents the basic concepts of learning strategy and strategy training. It also concerns the practice of strategy training or strategy-based instruction. The purpose of the thesis is to prove the teachability of learning strategy and through the field test to get the conclusion, and provide some suggestions about the learning strategy training and strategy instruction. In the field test, the subjects consist of 30 students who are the third-year English majors of Harbin University of Science and Technology. Fifteen students in the experimental group received strategies-based instruction on reading comprehension. The other fifteen students are in the control group or the comparison group. The instruments included three items: the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (Oxford, 1990); two questionnaires including 24 items of reading strategies and students'self-evaluation questions; two test papers of TEM-8 (reading comprehension). The two group are followed the regular course, and the experimental group not only followed the regular course, but also received the strategies-based instruction in the semester. The author got the conclusion from the analysis of the test and questionnaires: (1) The higher scores of SILL, the higher scores of one's reading tests. (2) The experimental group has got higher scores in the reading comprehension than the comparison group when both groups have received the strategy training, which shows that the strategy training can improve the students'performance in English learning to some extent. (3) Strategy training can improve the students'self-confidence and the awareness of learning strategy use.Learning strategies are of crucial importance in EFL learning and teaching. This thesis is theoretically and practically valuable in offering useful suggestions for English teachers and language learners.
