Bernad Malamud was a famous Jewish writer in the history of contemporary American literature, he almost described the Jew as the leading character, and mainly depicted the Jew'misery, and in the foundation to reflect the entire humanity's survival dilemma. This paper used the research methods which were social criticismmode, culture study theory and the close reading, and took Malamud's many works as the object of study, combined the writer's experience, background and the history reason, analysed the great suffering theme contained Malamud's creation, discussed the reason which caused the character's sufferings of the texts, then in a certain level scholarly researched and tentatively concluded the writer's efforts for seeking salvation suffering and leading the path of hope."Suffering"is a very broad conception both in the intent and the extent. The introduction part, studying the concept of"suffering"both China and the western to start, cleared the sufffering in the paper, and pointed out the suffering in malamud's works not only including the lack of substance, life of poverty, but also contained Jewish's kinds of hardships by prosecution, People's wound because of the slaughter and wars, and psychological experience such as solitary, horror, desperation, misery and so on. And then overviewed the suffering themes of Malamud's works and summarized the domestic and foreign Malamud's research present situation. On this basis, the paper established the theoretical basis and innovation value. Chapter one, according to the direct reason of causing misery and the different forms of sufferings, the suffering performance of Malamud's works were divided into three types: the hard life and the helpless of little people in the bottom of society; Jewish's physical and mental hardships which brought by persecution; People's wound because of the slaughter and wars, and thus analyzed the suffering forms of Malamud's works, showed the Jew's difficult existential state and painful psychological feelings in the suffering state, and took it as a symbol and revealed the plight of human survial. Chapter two, from the writer's unfortunately personal experience, the unfortunately suffering of the Jewish nation, and social background of 20th century these three aspects to explore the reason of suffering in Malamud's works. Malamud focused on suffering as well as human existence dilemma, has manifested the strong spirit of humanitarian and compassion feelings, trying to guide human out of its misery which seek to transcend the road was given all the human dignified ponder and good inspiration.
