College English is an integral part of higher education. As an organic part with full of vitality in higher education, the teaching goal of Vocational College English is to incarnate its occupational and practical orientation and to cultivate the students' mastery. Teaching assessment is a process that determines the degree of achieving the objectives of the course and teaching plan; and it is an important part of curriculum teaching. Nowadays, Vocational Colleges often adopt the traditional summative assessment. Such assessment values.the final result and neglects the process; and the partial assessed content is taken as the whole; also the assessment subject is single, etc. It is not a good way to evaluate students'comprehensive learning ability, it is not beneficial for the students'integrated development either. Formative assessment uses flexible ways to evaluate students'learning behavior, learning process and learning outcome. Meanwhile, it focuses on the comprehensive quality of students, not only pay attention to academic performance, but also lay emphasis on their learning interest, learning attitude, learning method, learning initiative, team spirit and so on. In addition, it respects for individual differences and keeps up with the trend of teaching assessment.My research combines the academic study method with the empirical study method. Based on the state of the field at home and abroad, this research tries to analyze the applicable necessity and possibility in Vocational College English teaching. Then the research enters into experiment of Vocational College English teaching. The experimental subjects, two parallel classes are chosen from Jiangxi Modern Polytechnic College. One class is served as a control group which is implemented summative assessment; the other one is served as experimental group which is implemented formative assessment. The research intends to hypothesize that adopting formative assessment is helpful to improve Vocational College students' English and have positive influence on students'learning interest, learning attitude, learning method, learning initiative and team spirit. The whole process of the experiment and some concrete methodologies that involved are illustrated. It turns out that the hypothesis in this research is confirmed. Some reflections respond to problems that arise in the experiment are made after the analysis of the result. Some referenced experimental enlightenments are also suggested in the end of the research for further study.
