In the history of translation studies, traditional translation studies regard translation merely as a linguistic transmission between languages and give the top priority to "faithfulness" and "equivalence". They hole that the translator should cast off the interference of subjectivity and reproduce the source text objectively and faithfully. The positive aspect of traditional theories lies in that they attach importance to the objectivity of translation. However, as translation does not take place in a vacuum, translators are inevitably influenced by various factors during the course of translation. So it's unwise to narrowly use "equivalence" to assess the quality of translation. The present study of translation is no longer constrained by traditional equivalence-oriented translation theories. It takes more extra-textual factors into consideration, such as the translator is concluded, for the translator is the most active factor in translating activity. In the translation circles, the most common terms are literal translation and liberal translation. They can compare beauty with "faithfulness" and "equivalence". The relationship between literal and liberal translation is dialectic, one has to remember that "in order to serve to the faithful of the original" "the basic is the faithful of the content", if the translation can agree with the original in content and style it will be the best. One has to observe three principles:firstly, if you can translate the original literally, try your best to do so; secondly, literal and liberal translation should suit for the concrete condition; thirdly, use the combination of literal and liberal translation, strictly avoid rigid and free translation.Dialogues in novels serve as an important instrument by which the writer gives each character a unique "voice", so that the personalities of each character permeate through the paper. Apart from this, dialogues in novel also bear the functions of helping develop the plot and depicting objective circumstances. So, translating dialogues in a novel is very hard, especially to maintain the style of the original work.Pride and Prejudice is the first and the most attractive novel by Jane Austen, an English novelist. Among many published Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice, Wang Keyi's and Sun Zhili's are popular with the civil people. This thesis will choose two master's Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice, they are Wang Keyi's and Sun Zhili's version. These two versions have enjoyed wild readers at home; the translators have profound cultural deposits. And the two versions have large difference in translation stratagems and styles. But they each have their strong points. This thesis will compare the two versions'translation methods and the choice of words to get the conclusion that different times and different knowledge background will influence the development of translation and also influence the criterion of translation. Different translator in different times will choose different translation methods, but both of the two versions are rationally to the time that they belong to.
