Cultivation Of Target Language Cultural Awareness Through Culture Teaching

The research on culture teaching is lagged behind in China compared with that of the Western countries. However, how to effectively cultivate college students' cultural awareness in the background of Chinese education is still a problem. Inspired by the above discussion, the author selects the topic of "Cultivating Cultural Awareness in College English Teaching" as the study.By quantitative analysis of the results of investigation and experiment, the author carries out an empirical study on culture teaching in college English teaching to testify the positive effects on cultivating and improving non-English major students' cultural awareness. Firstly, the author conducts investigations on 110 non-English majors and 45 English teachers, which show that students' target cultural awareness are weak, and teachers are facing many problems in culture teaching. On the basis of the results of the investigations, the author then carries out a teaching experiment in college English Intensive Reading classroom. It is an experiment conducted on culture teaching to 60 Chinese non-English majors in English class for 16 weeks, who are divided into experimental class and control class. During the experiment, the experimental class is given more chances to expose to English culture, while the control class is not. At the end, the subjects are examined by Wang Zhenya's "socio-cultural test" and language proficiency test. The results are analyzed, and show that the students in the experimental class have made greater progress in both cultural awareness and language proficiency than that of the control class.Some suggestions on culture teaching and learning are also made on the basis of the findings of the investigation and experimental teaching.
