The purpose of this paper is to discuss"The Consciousness of Tragedy in Wuthering Heights". This paper is based on Hegel's and Nietzsche's doctrines, trying to summarize and explain the tragic special characteristic by analysis of the novel. This article is composed of three chapters. The first chapter"highlighted its tragic spirit", based on Nietzsche theory, explains the tragic spirit in work. Nietzsche said that all living beings are immortal, despite of all the movement and flow of nature, the illness and death in an individual. The male and female characters, Heathcliff and Catherine, are the implication of such a primitive vitality in the novel Wuthering Heights. The explanation is divided into three sections. The first section analyses the distinct political body theory. People are always concerned about body words and often dismiss its discourse. They highlight the expression of the spirit. In fact, body is even more than the abstract values that can give us. Nietzsche once said that everything should take the flesh as the criterion and physical belief is more than the spiritual belief in his will power. This section uses this as a criterion to analyze the figures in Wuthering Heights to reveal the spiritual values which are implied. The section two presents the discourse deconstruction. Nietzsche thought that will and power was the basis and origin of the world; the pursuit of biological was to liberate their own strength first, because survival itself is the will and power. Heathcliff may be the best one to embody Nietzschea's will and power. This section contrasts the different elements between Heathcliff and Edgar Linton to explain the tragic temperament upon Heathcliff. The third section presents the publicity of individual life. The tragedy of his temperament dates from his instinctive urge and his drift for this impulse. And this is precisely coincident with Nietzsche's understanding of human instincts that the desire of people is the source of creative impulse. This section will be further study on the basis of Heathcliff. The second chapter presents the connotation of tragic conflict. This chapter focuses on the motives, the real essence and reconciliation in the tragedy of the conflict and discusses it further more. The first section is on motivation of the tragic conflict, thought the conflict between the hero and heroine, which originated in the spiritual differences. Because of all the actions should be dictates from the heart. Section two presents the real essence of the conflict. Since the tragic conflict originates the separatism from the characters, then the real tragedy is the conflict of self-body split and re-settlement. The contradictory one-sided bases on their own belief, then their contradictory intensified and lead to the birth of tragedy. We cannot simply judge which one is good and then goes around comes around to sum up the characters. Such should be described as a good tragedy as a good person commits a crime, but he has a strong will and one-sided character. Wuthering Heights is such a noble tragedy; the focus of this section is the tragedy of conflict and tragic fate of the hero and heroine. Section three presents the tragic conflict reconciliation. The heroine gets this highest re-integration of personality by the disintegration of her body suffering; the hero reached a settlement by compromise with the new force, as Hatton and small Catherine is the life cycle of himself and Cathy. The third chapter presents the use of tragic elements. Emily uses a lot of tragic elements in her works. These elements are good contrast for the tragic atmosphere, creating the effect of tragedy. This chapter focuses on the following three aspects. Section one focuses on the successful adoption of the Gothic mode. Emily follows the pattern of Gothic, which strengthened the tragedy atmosphere effectively. Section two focuses on the successful use of symbolism. It builds two special environments for us Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. In addition, Emily also integrated into the wilderness, storms, windows and other images in order that the unique nature scenes and characters in the novel are cross-echoed and integrated together. Section three focuses on the unique narrative mode. The novel twists and turns. All of these give readers a kind of deep feeling of the tragic fate of the characters in the novel.
