17 years, a genetic terms of the films produced between 1949 and 1966, was under the special political circumstance in the history of cinema in New China. As the most effective mass media at that time, films were used to publicize political policy and integrate the mind of people by the new political power. So the film production at that time became prosperous even without the consideration of the economy, however, it was also a tough time for creation under the high political pressure. The modern literature unfolded on the film screen can be divided into two sections. The first section is the masterpieces created by the modern litterateur after the May 4th Movement, such as February by Rou Shi, Blessing by Lu Xun, Flashbacks My Life by Lao She, The Shop of The Lin Family by Mao Dun and The Family, Garden of Repose by Ba Jin. The other section is the masterpieces created in Liberated Area, such as Daughters and Sons by Yuan Jing & Kong Jue, The Hurricane by Zhou Libo, The Marriage of Xiao Er Hei by Zhao Shuli. When we review the works in 17 years, we can find that the adaptions of literature are in the absolutely superior position in terms of quantity, meanwhile, they also belong to one of the most outstanding categories, such as Blessing, Flashbacks My Life and The Shop of The Lin Family, Early Spring in February which are the representatives of the peak of the film art at that time. It was also the time when Xia Yan's Drama Theory came into form. Hence, the adaption of the modern literature of 17 years cannot be denied when we want to study the film production of China.The first section will give us a detail introduction of the reason why the modern works were adopted on the film production under the background at that time, and then the article will analyze why the film producers like to adopt the modern literature under the political pressure from aspect of politics and art, attempting to analyze that the adoption of modern literature on the film screen is the best way.The second section will give us the textual analysis of Blessing, Flashbacks My Life, The Shop of The Lin Family and Early Spring in February from plots, characters and details, including the increase and decrease of the characters, the change of identity, the setting of characters'relationship, the adds and deletes of plots, the setting of details and so on. At last, the article will figure out the differences during adoption process. The third part of the article will conclude the characteristic of the works by the process of summing up the adaption. Why did they adopt in this way? Was it for the purpose of politics or art's necessity? The author tries to analyze the original intention of adaptors.Besides the introduction and conclusion, the article is divided into three chapters according to these three themes, and it will state step by step the characteristics of the adapted modern literature works in 17 years on the film screen.
