Montage is the technique of film cutting and conjunction of a series of shots which can be observed in movies. A movie consists a whole integration of organized film shots and scenes of different space, time, plots and angles of view. Such can also be seen in ancient Chinese literature, commonly in poems and rhyming lyrics where different scenes and discrete thoughts exist. In art, similarly, different time, space and characters can appear in one picture with a set of conjunction symbols to divide them into different scenes. Therefore, it can be said that the Montage thinking has long been applied since ancient history, although the technique is the outcome of the invention in the 20th century, and it has been existing in both Chinese and western art, contributing as an important role in its development, especially in the connection of scenes and expressional means. With a comprehensive view of Montage thinking, this analysis focuses on the conjunctional relationship, narrative method and the application of conjunction symbols by examining both Chinese and western artworks in a diachronic order.
