Through the presentation of historical details and the exploration of film aesthetics, this essay tries to find the possible factors contributing to that situation. After clarifying the historical outline of this film, the essay restores the novel and the corresponding screenplay to their age contexts to explore the different era demands between the adapter Xia Yan and the original author Mao Dun, while, by inquiring into the special adapting experience of the adapter Xia Yan, this essay also provides a new perspective of diachronic exploration.
