As the Nobel Prize winner, Hemingway is one of the most important writers in the history of American literature. Hemingway not only started a typical writing style of his own, but also created "code hero." Since Hemingway often uses hunting, fishing, boxing and bullfight as the theme of his stories, he is considered as a writer of androcentrism. Comparatively speaking, critics have paid less attention to female characters in his works, mostly because many critics think that Hemingway is not good at writing women and the females in his novels are flat and one-dimensional, just simple-minded creatures existing for men's pleasure. However, this is not always the case. Reading and analyzing Hemingway's work carefully, it isn't hard to discover that he portrays so many vivid heroines who are the most beautiful, kind, brave, independent and loving women in his works. Therefore, this paper argues that there isn't gender discrimination in Hemingway's novels. On the contrary, Hemingway is a writer with apparent female consciousness and he shows his sympathy and admiration to women faithfully in his works.
