Look Homeward, Angel (LHA). widely regarded as Thomas Wolfe's autobiography, has drawn critics' attention since its publication in 1929. Some focus on its factual and fictional forms while some explore its characteristics in writing, such as loose structure, symbolic meanings of some pervasive images, and poetic language. Now some begin to pay their attention to the incommunicable predicaments of the Gants which are closely related to such themes as loneliness, love, escape, and suffering in the novel. However, no interpretation of this novel has provided a systematic analysis of causes of the incommunicable predicaments of the Gants. This thesis is intended to cover this research gap by giving a detailed exploration of dialogue deficiency and disharmonious relationships in the Gants which brought about individuals' loneliness, and suffering, and the necessity of genuine dialogue to alleviate loneliness of modern people within the theoretical structure of Martin Buber's dialogical philosophy. The present thesis shows that dialogue deficiency is a crucial cause of disharmonious relationships of the Gants. Only when people initially make a genuine dialogue, can those symptoms, such as alienation, loneliness, and suffering be alleviated. Buber's dialogical philosophy offers modern human beings a way to establish harmonious relationships in modern society.
