Since 1980s, autonomous learning was introduced into the field of foreign language teaching, the majority of educators and experts started to be engaged in autonomous language learning. With the advent of information technology, the coming and rising of Internet provide a good environment for autonomous language learning. Some related researches about web-based autonomous language learning began to develop rapidly, however, these related researches about web-based autonomous language learning aren't satisfactory wholly, especially in web-based language learning, there are few researches about learner beliefs and learner strategies towards autonomy. This paper is to investigate non-English major postgraduates'characteristics on learner beliefs and learner strategies towards web-based autonomous language learning, and to explore non-English major postgraduates'autonomy in web-based language learning. The research investigated non-English major postgraduates of Hebei Medical University by using learner beliefs questionnaire and learner strategies questionnaire in web-based autonomous language learning. All the statistic data are analyzed by statistical instrument SPSS.13.0. Descriptive statistics is employed. The findings of the thesis are as followings:1) In the area of learner beliefs: in web-based autonomous language learning, most non-English major postgraduates hold positive beliefs, but most of them have a low sense of efficacy, that is, they lack of self-confidence, a low sense of efficacy reflects non-English major postgraduates'low learning autonomy. Most non-English major postgraduates hold positive and supportive beliefs to teachers'role in web-based autonomous language learning, but they hold negative beliefs to campus Internet management and resources.2) In the area of learner strategies: in web-based autonomous language learning, non-English major postgraduates generally use six strategies: cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, compensation strategies, memory strategies and social strategies. Compensation strategies, memory strategies and metacognitive strategies are used with high frequency. Affective strategies, cognitive strategies and social strategies are used with less frequency. Different students use different learning strategies, different learning strategies also reflect different learning autonomy, learning strategies reflect non-English major postgraduates'low autonomy overall. The results of the study provide an insight of Chinese non-English major postgraduates'characteristics of web-based autonomous English learning, at the same time, according to the results of the study, the thesis also gives some tentative suggestions for the teaching and learning in web-based environment.
