Intertextuality theory, as a new idea or method, emerged in French in the late sixties of last century. Because of its infinite vitality and rich space to explain, it soon attracted many theorists'attention and extended into many other areas of human and social science. It was firstly introduced into translation studies in the early 1990s, and infused a new perspective into this field. The influence of intertextuality on translation studies reflects in two aspects, namely, epistemology and methodology. From the epistemological point of view, there are various intertextual relations between different elements in the process of translation, thus the process of translation can be considered an activity with intertextual characteristics. From the methodological point of view, intertextuality theory can be used as the referential standard for the comment of literary and the analysis of discourse in order to guide the practice of specific translation. Therefore, it is a new method to introduce intertextuality theory to the translation studies. In this thesis, the author will focus on the methodological level to study how to use intertextuality theory to explore some more effective methods of translation.Based on the theory proposed by Hatim and Mason, combining with the techniques Lin Yutang applied in his translation, the author analyzes the intertextual phenomena in Fu Sheng Liu Ji written by Shen Fu in Qing dynasty. It is a typical essay with a lot of intertextual signals and brings a lot of difficulties to the translator. As the translator, Lin Yutang adopted various translation methods to deal with intertextual signals flexibly with the purpose of reproduction and reconstruction of intertextuality. Generally speaking, Lin Yutang has transferred most of the intertextual signals with the consideration of the effect of the intertextual signals in the source text and has made a great contribution to the spreading of Chinese culture to the Western world.
