Jack London was a self-made famous writer in the late of nineteenth century. His name itself was the embodiment of struggle spirit and romantic adventure. He had written more than fifty volumes of works from 1900 to 1916. Martian Eden was one of most famous stories in the twentieth century. The story was about the winding road to success and the tragic ending of a young writer who wanted to climb the ladder of upper class. Martin Eden possessed the quality of autobiography. Jack London injected his life experience and inner feeling into the protagonist. When telling the growth and destruction of Martin Eden, Jack London traced back his literary creation career and reflected upon his own setback and success in many respects.By virtue of the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud, the thesis tries to analyze the psychological motivation of the writer's literary creation and the psychological state of being of the main character. Then we will unscramble the death reason of Martin Eden from the perspective of psychoanalysis. Meanwhile, we probe into the essence of psychoanalysis and further point out that the theory and thinking of psychoanalysis have a positive impact upon the modern society, which represents an unscrambling way to the psychic.In Chapter One, we introduce the theory of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis and discuss the relationship between the literature and psychoanalysis. In Chapter Two, we try to analyze the writer's motivation behind the literary creation from the perspective of psychoanalysis. In Chapter Three, we try to probe into the main character's psychology on the basis of Freud's theory of Personality Structure. In Chapter Four, we analyze the death reason of Martin Eden from the psychoanalytic approach. In Chapter Five, we analyze the convergence and divergence of Martin Eden and Jack London on the basis of psychoanalysis.By analyzing Martin Eden, this thesis tries to probe into the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself and reveal the deep feeling of human being from the perspective of psychoanalysis. This thesis provides a new method to study the literary works by adopting the psychoanalytic approach.
