This dissertation aims at arguing that subject is a discursive construction through representation. Although well-accepted in modern cultural context, the theory of constructed subject is not formed in one day. The author discusses the theory of constructed subject and also makes necessary elaborations of positions of subject and other relevant issues in western mind in the dissertation. Three representational systems, Marxism, Psychoanalysis and Terry Eagleton's cultural theory, are selected to expound the process. Subject is constructed in discourse through those representational systems. This dissertation focuses on the discursive construction of subject, including analysis of the elements of a discursive structure and the explanation of the theory of power/knowledge. Furthermore, disciplined subject is taken as evidence of the discursive construction of subject. Since subject is constructed in discourse, the author of this dissertation will not be surprised if there is new discursive construction of subject in discourse in the future. Therefore, subject is constructed in discourse and positioning subject should be an open issue.
