As a typical genre of media discourse, news report is no longer thought to be objective and neutral, but subjective and ideological. With the development of the society, English news is spreading information in various forms to every corner in the world and ideologies concealed in them are exerting great influence on their readers. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze ideologies hidden in these English news reports.Critical discourse analysis (or CDA) is an important approach in the field of discourse analysis.Based on Halliday's Systemic-Functional Grammar, it aims to reveal the hidden ideologies behind language and to find out the relationship between language and ideology by studying details of linguistic structure. From the perspective of CDA, discourse is a social practice. Discourse is determined by social elements and has effects upon them. The production and interpretation of the text are the result of the interaction with social contexts. The main analyzing objectives of CDA are public discourses from television, advertisements, newspapers, official documents, laws, etc. This thesis, firstly adopting Halliday's transitivity theory as the analytical tool, tentatively proposes a functional model of Critical Discourse Analysis. The author analyzes three VOA news reports critically by virtue of this functional model of CDA to uncover the ideologies concealed in the selected news reports. The significance of this study is concluded into three aspects. Firstly, the study proves that economic news reports also carry ideologies similar to political and social news reports. Generally speaking, economic news reports appear to be neutral and unbiased at first sight. However, the detailed analysis reveals that ideology is inevitably concealed in them. Secondly, the contribution of this study is the set-up of a functional model of CDA, which is verified as a feasible and workable analytical model for CDA. Lastly, this study will improve people's critical reading ability and cultivate their critical awareness in language learning. This thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One presents the objective of the study, the analytical tool it employs, the significance of the research and the structure of the thesis.Chapter Two deals with literature review, including a brief introduction of CDA, the history and development of CDA, the methodology of CDA and critical discourse analysis in news report.Chapter Three introduces the transitivity system of Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar in detail, which is employed as the analytical tool of CDA in this thesis. In addition, a functional model of CDA is put forward tentatively in this chapter.Chapter Four is the main body of this thesis. It applies the proposed functional model of CDA to analyze some selected VOA news reports to reveal the underlying ideologies concealed in them.Chapter Five draws a conclusion by figuring out the significance of the research and pointing out the limitations of the study. |
