Textbooks, used by students and teachers, are the major resource of learning and teaching. They are the media to achieve teaching objectives. With the reform of education and diversified textbook resource in recent years, different varieties of English textbooks are available on the market, which poses a challenge to the users for their selection. Nowadays, a majority of the English teachers tend to teach everything in the textbooks to their students, instead of choosing useful parts of the textbooks. In fact, appropriate selection and effective employment of textbooks should be the first and foremost step in teaching process. Therefore, critical analysis and evaluation on textbooks has become an essence. Consequently, learning to use textbooks for specified purposes can be attainable objectives in our teachingFive parts are presented in this thesis. The first part talks about the background, the importance of the research, methods, and the structure. The relevant research on the evaluation on English textbooks, and criteria of the evaluation are covered in the second chapter, including the research on the evaluation of teaching materials at home and abroad. The third chapter is the analysis of the comments from teachers who are using the two textbooks:Oxford English and New Century English. They express their attitudes and compare the advantages and disadvantages of the two different kinds of teaching materials. Then the comparison and contrast of the Oxford English and New Century Senior English are presented in the fourth chapter, involving the guiding principles, the book structures, quality of the two books, language knowledge and language skills, etc. Knowledge of language in the two textbooks contains the comparison and contrast of phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, etc.; the comparison and contrast of listening, speaking, reading and writing are included in language skills part. The last chapter draws the conclusion of the thesis based on the investigation and analysis, and put forward some suggestions on how to edit and teach the textbook.
