| John Updike (1932-2009), two times Pulitzer Prize winner, was said to be the most likely Nobel Prize winner in modern America. John Updike's Rabbit series has been considered as his masterpiece. The first novel of Rabbit series, Rabbit, Run, was written in 1960, and it reflected much of Updike's confusion towards the social changes of United States during that time. Rabbit, Run features Rabbit Angstrom, a former high school basketball star and middle-class paragon who would become Updike's most enduring and critically examined character. Although John Updike is one of the most influential modern American writers, his study in China is not adequate and no study can be found from the view of alienated American dream. This study under the title of A Study on Alienated American Dream Reflected in John Updike's Rabbit, Run focusing on Rabbit, Run, analyzes the main character of the novel, and the root of spiritual crisis of American middle-class in order to reveal the alienated American dream as a key factor in Rabbit, Run.The suffering of Rabbit is still something meaningful when considering real American life. Thus, this novel is a mirror of modern American society. It is a true-to-fact description of the condition of America in 1950s, so it can serve as a reference of today's China. |
