In 1950s, Musical Forms and Work Analysis, as a systematic course, was established in musical institutes. Since then it has also gradually been established for musical majors in various artistic institutes as well as normal colleges and universities. In China, the first coursebook on musical forms is Musical Forms and Work Analysis, which was written by Wu Zuqiang and published by People's Music Publishing House in 1962. After that, there has been various types of coursebooks on musical forms. As the author of the thesis, I have taught the course of musical forms for years in a normal university. In addition, I have made a careful study of many scholars' works on musical forms. With those experiences, I selected Li Jiti's work, Musical Forms and Work Analysis, as the object of my research in my thesis. This book of Li Jiti was published by Central University for Nationalities Press.Li Jiti's work, Musical Forms and Work Analysis, is the result of thirty years of her teaching and research. Her unique pedagogical ideas, such as her methods and styles of teaching in China's perspective, are fully reflected in this work. Since its appearance, this work has been popular not only in Chinese Mainland but in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. It has become not only the coursebook of undergraduate musical majors in many musical institutes but the designated reference for entrance examination of some graduate schools. This work by Li Jiti resolved some academic problems that was debatable or misunderstood, such as the categorization of musical periods. Li Jiti in this work also made a detailed interpretation of certain easily confused issues, such as the difference between the sole two-part musical form and the compound musical form. In terms of the interpretation, Li Jiti pays more attention to the structure and function of tonality in tonal music period as well as the structural significance of time division and duration ratio in musical works whose description depends on the flow of time. Moreover, in this work of Li Jiti, there is a vivid analysis report attached to each typical musical cases selected for each musical structure. This arrangement achieved a perfect combination of technical analysis and musical analysis. In summary, this thesis is constituted by three chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the biography of Li Jiti and the background of her work Musical Forms and Work Analysis. Chapter 2 conducts a detailed analysis of the contents of this work. Chapter 3 argues for the IV theoretical value and application of this work in the teaching of musical forms.
