In literary history,David·Herbert·Lawrence and Cao Yu are considered two highly influentialmodern writers Their works challenge the traditional thought,which makes them controversial,butlater their artistic achievements are greatly recognized and praised They express the strong humanisticconcern for the society and human beings in the process of human civilization in their respective worksLawrence's novels brought him wide reputation and Cao Yu w-as also an outstanding representative ofNew Culture Movement during the time of great May Fourth Movement The academic researches onboth writers have matured now,however,works that study the two authors from the perspective ofcomparative literature are not many The dissertation compares their two important works Sons'andZovers'and Thunderstorm.The similar life experiences,similar themes and the similar fate of theircharacters reflected in their works make them have coincidence and comparability However,after all,the two writers lived in different countries and different cultural backgrounds,their elaboration andsublimation of their similar themes(emotional tragedy,anti—modern civilization,sex)have somedifferent points,and different cultural connotations are hidden behind their similar expressingtechniques Both of their works are of a certain autobiographic color,this thesis will compare twoauthors'similarities and differences with their real life as the starting pointFirstly,the thesis mainly introduces Lawrence and Cao Yu's life and love experiences,makingpreparations for the analysis of the emotional tragedy and fate tragedy of two works The second partmakes a detailed analysis of the emotional tragedy and fate tragedy by the application of tragedyaesthetics so as to find their internal relations of life philosophy and the transcendence of their tragicsense Both writers can bravely confront with the survival difficulties and take a correct life attitude,which reflects their similarities of their life philosophy However,because the East and the West havecompletely different cultural environment,their life philosophy show-s different characteristics andconsequently results in different destinies for their rebellion On the study of anti—modern civilization,Lawrence stresses on protesting against the modern industrialization brought by the IndustrialRevolution which leads to the alienation of the relationship between man and woman and seeking forthe true humanity Cao Yu opposes to the defective and rational modern civilization and tries to find outthe true life The second part also illustrates two writers'religious complex and its significance increating Sons'andZovers'and Thunderstorm The third part discusses their different philosophy on sex Lawrence believes that the worst crime of the Industrial Revolution is the suppression of the humannature,in particular,the sex and instinct He attempts to solve social problems by establishingharmonious relations between sexes Cao Yu affirms the natural desire and sex,and he adds that somepains in the life are expressed through the pursuit of sex Sex is no longer a dirty word,but the sign ofthe existence of humans'life and consciousness,along with the natureOwning to their different cultural identities,two writers have different fates for rebellion,theirdeep concern over the nation,society,and human cultural consciousness go beyond the geographicalconstraints and arouse resonance in the Eastern-Western cultural exchange,which then makes a greatcontribution to the prosperity of our nation and human culture...
