Ling Shuhua is an important women writer of May Fourth period. Shesuccessfully moulds the image of new finest lady in her many novels. This group oflady images comes from transitional China. They stand for the living situation of themiddle and upper female strata during that time. Lin's images have half-old andhalf-new characteristics of the time. They are not only influenced by traditionalculture, but also by new ideas. In great changes of May Fourth period, they are onegroup full of contradictions and confusion. Lin's description about these ladies isdifferent from the mainstream writers'literary creation. It has deep meaning for itsunique and valuable literary discovery. This paper summarizes the generalcharacteristics of the new finest lady image on basis of image perusal. Throughanalysis of these persons'contradictions and confusion, we can further affirm Lin'screation about these images. This paper is divided into three chapters. Chapter onesummarizes the new finest lady image's mental chase and it also comprehensivelydisplay the group feature by describing the relations between the lady images and oldfamily, traditional culture, new ideas. Chapter two mainly analyzes the contradictionsand confusion of the new finest lady between new and old. Chapter three emphasizesLin's writing value from the following three aspects: the uniqueness of the new finestlady image in modern literature, the relation between writer's real life experience andthese images, these images'inspiration to modern females.
