Reconstruction And Compensation Of Cultural Default In Translation From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Recently, the practical research about relevance-theoretical translation of culturaldefault is inviting increasing attention of the scholars both at home and abroad.However, there are some shortages. They discussed the possibility and necessity ofapplication of relevance theory to translation and cultural default but failed to putforward comprehensive strategies of translation of cultural default in light ofrelevance theory. In addition, the former studies either had discussion about culturaldefault in translation or studied translation based on relevance theory instead ofcombining the three factors together. They just discussed the phenomenon of culturaldefault and its translation strategies based on the analysis of the words or thesentences within a certain passage instead of analyzing examples from an extensiveway. Thus, some questions in this regard are still open to further investigation, andhence arises the necessity for this potential research and thesis which is hoped tofurther the research of the potentially profound relationship between relevance theoryand translation and find out more plausible solutions for translation practices.Chapter One introduces some essential concepts of relevance theory relative tothe study. The general translation process based on relevance theory is also suggested.Chapter Two provides an overall view of cultural default and its communicativevalues. In addition, the relevance-theoretic framework for translating cultural defaultis given.Chapter Three gives examples to examines how to deal with the translation ofcultural default by way of relevance-theoretical approach and puts forward seventranslation strategies in reconstructing and compensating cultural default in translation,namely, cultural transplantation, cultural annotation, cultural integration, culturaladaption, cultural filtration and cultural omission, all of which have theircharacteristics and coexist in the relevance-theoretic framework.In conclusion, since translation is a kind of cross-cultural communication, acareful study of cultural default is essential for successful translation. Relevancetheory, due to its great explanatory power, can provide some illuminating insights incultural default and its compensation and reconstruction in translation.
