Canada is a multiethnic and multicultural nation. She has gained a lot of valuable experience in language education and cultural retention. The thesis, from the perspective of Canadian bilingual education, elaborates on French immersion education in Canada and its successful experience. Bilingual teaching has been carried out in China's universities and colleges for many years and has achieved a lot, but some problems still exist in bilingual teaching. It is helpful for us to have an idea about the Canadian French immersion education and the inspirations from immersion education can help us to promote the bilingual teaching in China's universities and colleges. This thesis is divided into 5 chapters. Chapter 1 defines two terms"bilingual education"and"bilingual teaching", and also states the main models of bilingual education. In Canada, bilingual education is used, but in China, bilingual teaching is used instead of bilingual education. Chapter 2 explores the main reasons for Canada to carry out bilingual education from two aspects--multiculturalism and bilingualism. Chapter 3 is devoted to Canadian French immersion education. The first French immersion class started in St. Lambert Quebec in 1965 and the programs subsequently spread to each of the other nine provinces. French immersion has been shown to have positive results. This chapter explores four reasons for its success. Chapter 4 states the current bilingual teaching situation in China's universities and colleges and then it analyses the reasons for its shortcoming from three aspects. Besides, it explores what China's universities and colleges can learn from French immersion education. Chapter 5 demonstrates a successful bilingual teaching case--International College of Business and Technology, Tianjin University of Technology (ICBT, TUT). This chapter analyses its success from teaching materials, bilingual teachers training and teaching strategies.Learning from the success of Canadian French immersion education, with their own innovations with Chinese characteristics, China's universities and colleges will promote the bilingual teaching quickly and finally make it a success.
