The Generation And Development Of Adverb "Ke"

"可"in Pre-Qin Period was a single meaning-verb, to the modern Chinese grammar developed into a functionally complex, semantically diversified adverb. Thus the grammaticalized process of"可"is "verb - auxiliary verb - adverb ".This paper mainly discusses the adverb"可"in terms of its generation and development.The Adverb"可"produced early. It sprouted before Qin dynasty, and became qualified through Han Dynasty to the Southern and Northern Dynasties. Since Tang Dynasty its frequency of use has been improved and as an adverb its function, nature and meaning were becoming increasingly complicated. In Qin Dynasty the adverbial function which evolved from "可+ V" in the auxiliary verb "可" began to sprout. From Han Dynasty to Ming and Qing Dynasties, "可" 's part of speech as an adverb clearly presented and developed into"Estimated adverb", "Adverb of degree", "Undertake adverb", "Adverb of frequency" and "adverb" ,five main functions. Though its adverbial function has been very complex, "可" in modern Chinese never cease its steps of grammaticalization, and further developed an adverbial function of "turning point", "question", and "positive".Reviewing the grammaticalized process of the adverb "可" and its factors, the main focus of this paper is of two parts:The importantance in this paper is ChapterⅢ: The generation and development of the adverb"可". ChapterⅡdeals with generation process of adverb"可"in modern Chinese, including the source, as well as the links between various semantic functions, and investigates the factors that affect the semantic evolution of the adverb"可"from several aspects ,such as the structure, expression, cognitive,etc.
