The Relationship Between Writing Motivation And Writing Quality Of English Majors

The present study discussed the relationship between writing motivation and writing quality. It selects writing purpose, writing need, writing interest, writing anxiety and extent of effort as five motivation variables. Firstly we summarize research findings on language learning motivation, writing motivation and the above five writing motivation variables during recent years. We use questionnaires and writing assignments to collect data. Then software SPSS 13.0 is applied to do correlation and regression analysis. Subjects'writing product is evaluated according to Jacob's scale. Through data analysis, it comes to the results that there are six kinds of writing purposes as leaning situation, individual improvement, intrinsic interest, examination, going abroad, and academic requirement; writing needs are classified as long-term and immediate need; writing interest is divided into intrinsic and extrinsic interest; for writing anxiety, there are using anxiety, conception anxiety and evaluation anxiety; finally effort is categorized as autonomous effort, task-based effort, revision effort and facilitative effort. Our findings of the relationship between writing motivation variables and writing quality is that writing purpose, writing need and extent of effort positively affect writing quality, while writing anxiety negatively; writing interest is not an influential factor to writing quality. At last the writer concludes the present study's findings, implications for English learning and teaching, its limitations and suggestions for future study.
