Research On Samurai's Spirit In Hagakure

IN Japanese pre-modern times, because of the absorption of Confucianism's theory, Bushido changed to a new direction called Crescent. Although the Crescent's theory became popular in that age, many samurai thinkers who had the will of resurrecting the pride of traditional Bushido still worked hard for their ideal. Yamamoto Tsunetomo and his works Hagakure were the representations. As Bushido which was advocated in Hagakure had the purity that was older than Crescent and nearer to samurai's original spirit, it became the indispensable file for the research of Bushido.This essay begins with spirit of Die madly which is the most representative thing in Bushido and analyzes the view of life and death based on Hagakure's original contents. And then it discusses how the spirit of Die madly influenced personal samurai and attacked samurai's society.Second, the essay focuses on the everyday work of samurai and finds the spirit of devotion to the public through samurai's work. After analyzing the relationship between devotion to the public and personal samurai, a viewpoint is put forward. That is the spirit of devotion which has the style of Hagakure's Bushido is related closely to the extinction of private spirit.Last, with the combination of the spirit of Die mad and devotion the spirit of loyalty hidden behind the deep layer of Hagakure's Bushido is dig out and given a concept called mad loyalty according to its features. Then a concept called loving and bearing is put forward in order to give the spirit of mad loyalty a further instruction. Finally, the conclusion that"mad loyalty is the essence of Hagakure's Bushido is reached.
