Through paying close attention to and pondering over the "existence form" of "human being" in actual life, Sun Li, the writer, entrusts a sense of peculiar "beautifying" tendency to his novel in its surface layer; while at the same time, in its deep layer, endows his novel with an extreme anxiety and "broken" consciousness which reveals the writer' s great concern of such mass "existence forms" as the country, the nation and the society under certain historic situations. Basing itself upon Sun Li ' s creative texts in different periods as well as different stages, this paper makes a survey of the surface "beautifying" tendency and the underlying "broken" consciousness. It contains five parts, approximately 20,000 words.Part I serves as the introduction. In the process of exploring how to appreciate Sun Li ' s concern of and reflection on the "existence form" of human being in his novel creation, this paper draws out the fact of the surface "beautifying" tendency and the underlying "broken" consciousness.Part II first makes a comprehensive analysis and induction of Sun Li' s novels about "the War of Resistance against Japan" in his early period. The writer' s deep "broken~~ consciousness brought about by the breakages of his homeland during warring years was greatly cloaked in itssurface "beautifying" tendency. He is pursuing a "perfection of beauty",o1othat is, in content, Sun Li represents many vigorous scenes and portrays various adorable young women in the country; while in its artistic form, he lays great emphasis on a simple, straightforward style of writing, the happy blend of feeling and setting, and a poetic language.Part III takes a typical example for minute analysis, i. e. "The Biography of Blacksmith and Carpenter," a novelette appeared in the early 1950' s. Since the changing and alienating of people' s relationships, the writer' s "broken consciousness aroused by the breakages of families, friends and lovers has been perfectly melted with the text' s surface "beautifying" tendency, which mainly concerns with the recollection and imagination of one' s happy childhood in content and its artistic form appears to be much more mature.Part JV pays attention to those "Yun Zhai" novels concerning "the Great Cultural Revolution" in Sun Li' s later creative period. Just disentangled from that catastrophe, the writer shows unintentionally his "broken consciousness through the critique of the distortion of human nature, the degradation and lost of cultural morality in that period. Accordingly, the surface "beautifying" tendency is less emphasized. However, there still exists the "beautifying" tendency of texts. To criticize "the Cultural Revolution" through "appreciation of the ugly" just means the writer's pursuit of beauty.Part N serves as the conclusion. With the above analysis of Sun Li' s novels in different period, this paper concludes the existence of the surface "beautifying" tendency and the underlying "broken" consciousness in his novel creation, and attempts to further probe into reasons for this phenomenon.
