This paper intends to provide a new angle-cognitive perspective, from which reading is explored. Different from the traditional view, the cognitive view of reading suggests that reading is a cognitive process in which the reader engages in a conversation with the text or the author. In this view, reading is no longer merely a word-for-word translation process. Instead, it is an interaction. The reader, in turn, becomes an active participant in reading activity. The psychological fundamental for reading is introduced with emphasis on the cognitive and metacognitive influences on reading comprehension. And then an experimental study is conducted for verification. The conclusion is thereafter reached that reading comprehension is closely related to and greatly affected by one抯 cognition and metacognition. The implications and suggestions for EFL and ELT are also presented at the end of the paper.
