MASTERS THESIS Relevance theory proposed by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson, is a new psycho-logical approach to pragmatics , which attempts to answer not only philosophical questions about the nature of communication , but also questions about how the interpretation process unfolds in the hearer抯 mind. Pragmatic approach to translation strives for pragmatic equivalent effect between the source and target texts by bringing out the intended meaning of the original . Correct cognition and understanding of natural language is the premise for achieving pragmatic equivalent effect in translation. According to the relevance theory, understanding correctly the natural language lies in inferring and searching for relevance . Hence, the author of the thesis holds that relevance theory is the foundation of pragmatic approach to translation.
