Translating "Deviation" In Verse Drama: A Literary Stylistics Study

Although no attempt has been made in a systematic way to explore drama translation from a literary stylistics approach, this study seeks to prove that literary stylistics and drama translation can be a happy alliance.The complexity nature that drama exists both on the page and the stage compels me to answer the question first: what is my object of investigation in drama translation studies? Assuming that a dramatic text in its own right can be a valid area of investigation to understand drama altogether, I conduct my drama translation studies within the literary system, rather than the larger theatre discourse. But the overlap between page and stage is also a focus of attention.Literary stylistics gives a special concern to "deviation" against the norms of language and conception, where stylistic losses or distortions tend to occur in the process of translation as a result of the translator's stylistic insensitivity. Such a translation that merely remains at the level of referential equivalence can never be seen as a faithful rendering of a work of art. Therefore, it is hoped that literary stylistics can help drama translators to represent with greatest possibility the stylistic value as well as dramatic effect generated by deviant use of language in the original drama text.
