By using the method of experimental phonetics, this thesis attempts to give a detailed phonological study of tones in Taiyuan dialect. In the first part of the thesis, the initials and finals of Taiyuan dialect are briefly introduced and compared with those of Putonghua, and I review the previous studies on the tones of Taiyuan dialect. In the second part, recorded speech materials are analyzed by MiniSpeech Lab software and investigated from three aspects: citation form, tone sandhi in disyllabic sequences (including non-reduplicates and reduplicates), and neutral tone in disyllabic and trisyllabic sequences. The experimental results are as follows:In Taiyuan dialect, there are five citation tones: Tl (21), T2 (53), T3 (45), T4 (2?), T5 (5?).The main tone sandhi phenomena of reduplicates in disyllabic sequences are as follows: (among these tone sandhi, (6) is my new discovery)(1).T2+T2-T1+T2 (2).T4+T1-T5+T1(3).T4+T4-T5+T4(4).T5+T2-T4+T2(5).T5+T3-T4+T3(6).T5+T5-T4+T5The tone sandhi phenomena of reduplicates in disyllabic sequences are as follows:(D.T1+T1-T1+T3(2).T2+T2-T2+T1(3).T3+T3-T3+T2(4).T5+T5-T5+T4The experimental results about neutral tone are as follows: in disyllabic sequences, the pitch value of neutral tone is always the fixed value 21; when neutral tone is in non-prepausal position in trisyllabis sequences, its starting point is in coarticulation with the ending point of the preceding stressed tone, and its ending point is in coarticulation with the starting point of the succeeding stressed tone, that is to say, the pitch value of the neutral tone is the transition between two stressed tones; when two neutral tones are consecutive, the pitch value of the first neutral tone is the fixed value 21, and that of the final neutral tone is lowered to 11.In the third part, the tone sandhi phenomena of Taiyuan dialect are analyzed by Optimality Theory. It shows that OT can provide a simple and correct analysis of tone sandhi in Taiyuan dialect.
