The thesis intends to explore the cultural manipulation on the literary translation in China by disclosing the factors influencing translators' strategies.Venuti's definition indicates that translators' cultural attitudes are root reasons for domestication and foreignization in their translation. Based on Lefevere's theory of poetics, ideology and patronage, the thesis tries to achieve a comprehensive understanding of hidden reasons for translators' strategies. The thesis offers a historical survey for the development of the two strategies in China. According to their cultural conditioned features, the development of the two strategies is divided into three stages. As the germinating stage, ancient Buddhist scriptures translation begins the earliest exploration on domestication and foreignization, but their arguments are unsystematic and only concerns about translation styles. The developing stage lasts from the Jiawu War (1894-1895) to the 1930s, from extreme domestication (as in Lin Shu's case) to extreme foreignization (as in Lu Xun's case) to the translation debate between Lu Xun and Liang Shiqiu. The alternatives of the two strategies are in fact the conflict between the diverse cultural attitudes. Due to the stress on the social functions of literary translation during this period, the application of the two strategies is much "target-oriented". Finally, the maturing stage begins since the 1980s, the two strategies get further developed in theory as well as in practice. At last, the thesis draws the conclusion that different cultural demands at different time tend to guide translators' strategies to domesticate or foreignize.
