This paper is designed to examine a range of devices in a text that contribute to the ohesion of the text - the dependency relation of one linguistic item in a text on others for its interpretation. The cohesive devices which we describe are reference, substitution, llipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. They serve to interweave the sentences utterances) in a text (discourse) into a coherent whole and serve as a tool to keep the information flow going on smoothly in the text. They provide devices for the writer to rrange his ideas on paper, thus they can be employed as a guide to our EFL writing.
