| As a prominent English writer who is famous not only for his superbmastery of the English language that is not his mother tongue, but also fOr hisartistic achievements, especially his innovation in technique, Joseph Conrad hastriggered profound interest among critics. The present thesis attempts to study theimpressionist techniques in one of his masterpieces Lord Jim, hoping to find outConrad's initiative in artistic creation and his philosophical orientation revealedthrough his unique techniques. By analyzing the visual descriptions, the narrativemethods, including language, achronological narration, and his combined use ofdifferent POint of vieW as well as his impressionist temporality in the novel, I findthat his impressionist techniques mirmr the subjectivity and individuality ofhuman consciousness, thus bringing authenticity and vividness to his work. Hissingular techniques also invite the readers to participate actively in the renderingof his impressionist collages. Through a detailed study of his techniques, I amable to see that Lord Jha discloses COnrad's pessimistic and skeptical philosophyof life, while his belief in fidelity and solidarity does not deprive his work of allthe hope for human existence. |
